How crash call-out became personal for South Australian firefighters

A South Australian fire brigade has opened up about the death of one of their own in a tragic crash.

The officers have spoken about the tragedy near Kadina last month, ahead of the Easter long weekend.

The tragedy still looms in the mind of brigade member Rhianna Maddison.

"The pager dropped, I read it and instantly your stomach sinks when you read that somebody's trapped," Maddison said.

Fellow brigade member Ben Manners said as the crew began the 15-minute drive to the scene, the radio calls from those at the scene became increasingly frantic. In this case it was personal when one of their colleagues died at the scene.
