MUST KNOW for your VORT: Task 13. Reverse parallel parking

Stop in safe and legal place with a good view in both directions, obeyed all signs on the road.

There is no: 

- solid yellow line, 

- bike lane

- bus stop

- fire hydrant

- post box

- or driveway

According to the road law you must remember to:

- Obey all road signs

- signal at least 5 seconds, moving off from the kerb

- Give way to all traffic

- do not obstruct other road users

- Use park brake

- Do not dry steering

-  Observe all around for potential hazard

Leaving Parking Bay

1.Select reverse gear and (for manual) bring clutch to friction point,

2.Observation all around, right blind spot, right mirror, centre mirror, left mirror, left blind spot and look out rear window (direction of travel)

3.Reverse vehicle approx. 1 metre then stop (find the suitable space for Moving off)

4.Check Centre mirror and right mirror, apply right signal (minimum 5sec.)

5.Select Drive (or 1st for manual) gear

6.Apply hand brake (optional)

7.Find friction point (for manual)

8.Check Centre mirror and Right mirror again

9.Check blind spot over your right shoulder

10.Release hand brake (if it was applied) and, at the same time, look into direction you drive

11.Turn wheels to full right lock and hold (Slow car - fast hands)

12.When the front pole lines up with the left bottom corner of wind screen, continue to move slowly and turn the steering wheel 2 times to the left

13.Find the front pole at the end of the front passenger’s window

14.Roll and Turn steering wheel to full left lock and/or straighten vehicle parallel to curb

15.Find the back right side pole in the centre mirror and stop

Enter Parking Bay

1.Select reverse gear and (optional) apply hand brake to prevent rolling

2.Bring clutch to friction point (for manual)

3.Observation all around: right blind spot, right mirror, centre mirror, left mirror, left blind spot and looking out rear window (direction of travel)

4.Reverse vehicle in a straight line until front pole appears in the centre of rear small window, then stop (Apply hand brake to prevent rolling (optional))

5.Observation all round: left blind spot, left mirror, centre mirror, right mirror and right blind spot 

6.Confirm, the road is clear

7.Now look through back window (direction of travel) before reversing

8.Turn wheels to full left lock and reverse back until the vehicle is at 45° -  look for the license plate stick (rear centre pole) above the rear door handle, then

9.Straighten the wheels (it’s two turns to the right). (Slow car - fast hands)

10.Continue reversing

11.When the front pole lines up with the centre of the passenger mirror stop (Apply hand brake to prevent rolling (optional))

12.Turn Steering wheel to full right lock. (Roll and Turn)

13.Straighten when vehicle is parallel to curb (Slow car - fast hands)

14.Select Drive (or 1st for manual) gear

15.Apply hand brake to prevent rolling (optional), and

16.Move forward, positioning the vehicle parallel to curb

17.Reverse (if necessary) until central, and

18.Stop and secure the vehicle (apply Park brake, Select Park (Neutral - for manual) gear, release foot brake, release clutch (for manual))

* After entering the parking bay, complete the exercise with no more than two directional changes (i.e. changes direction to drive forward to straighten, then changes direction for the second time to centralise between the poles);

**Parallel park the vehicle so that the left wheels are within 300mm of the kerb and straight, and centrally located not less than 900mm to the nearest pole;
